Chapter Fourteen

I was most certainly not looking forward to the day when renovations would start on the house, but the next week, that day came. Lily didn’t abandon me this time—she probably knew I would’ve put tacks in her bed—but it was still distinctly uncomfortable to open up the kitchen door and see Em standing there once again, toolbox in hand.

“Hey,” she said, her voice low. She tried a small, apologetic smile, and I gave her one in return that was of the standard eye-contact-with-a-stranger-on-the-street variety. I considered that to be quite generous, honestly.

“Come in,” I said. “I’m going to be preparing for the yard sale while you work. Lily’s at your disposal.”

“I thought I’d start with removing the old cabinet doors. Replacing them is the biggest project so far. How’s that sound?” Em motioned behind her with her thumb to where I could see her truck parked in the driveway. The boxes for the new cabinet doors were in the back.

“Fine,” I replied, trying at least to sound neutral and not snippy. The fewer conversations I had with her, the better, right? But when she offered me an acknowledging smile-grimace and headed past me to the kitchen with her crowbar, I caught the scent of her hair and it nearly knocked me to my knees.

How, after so long...? She still smelled the same. Like apple shampoo and powdered makeup.

But the way a powder foundation made her skin less shiny pleased her, and I’d always loved makeup, so I encouraged her. It was one of the few things I was more confident about than she was.

And once again smelling that mix of scents that so defined her...

Sorrow frosted the edges of my heart, but at the same time, there was a sense of release, an unclenching. My body automatically relaxed, and somehow, tentatively, my emotions followed. This kind of anger would be slow to give up its grip, but I could feel it loosening just a little.

The sharp clatter as she dropped the first cabinet door she removed startled me from my thoughts. I felt a little bewildered, but I took a breath and walked behind her to the dining room where all of my yard sale items waited for price stickers.

It was a long morning of trying to decide how much to charge for things that felt like pieces of my life, even if they were inconsequential ones. Over in the kitchen, there was the constant racket of Em and Lily removing the old cabinet doors and swearing about stuck screws. At one point, I was surprised by Em’s voice behind me.

“Hey, that’s my doll!”

It was a Rainbow Brite toy with green yarn hair in two pigtails, and I turned around in my seat and held it up with a frown.

“It is not! You always used to say
